Downtown Columbia ®
A development of The Howard Hughes Corporation®, Downtown Columbia is located at the center of Columbia, MD, one of the first master-planned communities in the U.S. founded by legendary developer James W. Rouse in 1967. Conveniently located between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Columbia is composed of 14,000 acres including ten completed residential villages and a deep pipeline of commercial development opportunities within its Downtown.
At full buildout, the redevelopment of Downtown Columbia will include three new and reconfigured neighborhoods – Merriweather District®, Lakefront District and Central District featuring more than 14 million square feet of residential, office, hotel, retail, cultural, and public uses including public parks, trails and more.
Columbia, Maryland
Columbia, Maryland, was founded by James Rouse over 50 years ago. A businessman, activist, an early proponent of urban renewal, Rouse envisioned a better city — a community based on social ideals and progressive development, a “garden for the growing of people.” Attracting a diverse cross-section of residents and industries, Columbia became one of the first master-planned communities in the U.S. in 1967, and would continue to elevate the notion of what a modern city could be for decades to come.
Today, Downtown Columbia stands as an urban district that embraces its future and an exceptional business, residential, retail, and cultural destination. It promotes the growth and vitality of the community and its businesses, implements beautification projects, supports transportation initiatives, and hosts engaging events — like Books in Bloom — that bring people together.
